Revenue gets tough on late payment of tax bills

HMRC has taken a tougher line on businesses wanting to pay their tax bills late, doubling the percentage of tax deferral applications that it turned down last year.

The taxman rejected 5.8pc of all VAT, PAYE and Corporation tax deferral applications in 2010, up from the 2.7pc rate seen during 2009. The total number of rejections rose from 6,760 to 8,550.

HMRC did grant 138,700 new arrangements worth £2.34bn in 2010 and since its Time to Pay scheme launched in November 2008 in response to the recession, it has allowed 395,400 bills to be deferred, worth £6.83bn.

HMRC said there had been a 60pc decline in demand for the scheme in December compared with at its peak in March 2009. So far it has collected £5.87bn of the tax deferred and expects to recover more than 90pc of the monies left outstanding.

Business groups have singled out the scheme as one of the most effective in helping companies weather the recession.

Andrew Cave, spokesman for the Federation of Small Businesses, said: “This is the only government scheme in the five years I have worked at the FSB where I have had members call up and say how grateful they are about the Government doing it. It gave them a huge amount of wriggle room, which was very helpful.”
